Garden Party & Hostess Gift Flowers NYC: Memorial Day to Summer Entertaining

By the TJ Flowers & Events design team — Manhattan florist since 1988.

Summer Entertaining Starts Memorial Day Weekend

From Memorial Day weekend (May 23-25, 2026) through Labor Day, Manhattan and the surrounding suburbs go into full entertaining mode. Brownstone backyard dinner parties, UES penthouse terrace cocktails, Hamptons weekend houses, rooftop birthdays, and casual weeknight dinners with friends — the season for showing up with something thoughtful.

Flowers are the universal "I'm so glad to be here" gesture. This guide covers the rules, the right arrangements, and the timing for summer hostess gifts and garden party floral.

Rule #1: Don't Make the Hostess Find a Vase

The single most-broken rule of hostess gift flower-giving: arriving with a wrapped bouquet that the hostess then has to abandon her guests, find a vase, trim, arrange, and place. It's not a gift — it's a chore you handed her.

The fix: arrive with an arrangement already in a vessel, ready to place on the table. Or, even better, send it ahead of time to arrive an hour before the party so it's already styled when guests arrive.

The Five Best Hostess Gift Arrangements

1. Low garden centerpiece in a stoneware vessel

The classic. 12-14 inches tall (low enough that guests can see across the table), lush garden style — garden roses, ranunculus, hydrangea, sweet pea, eucalyptus — in a hand-thrown stoneware or ceramic vessel. Hostess places it on the dinner table or buffet.

Price: $200-$400

2. Compact mantel/console arrangement

For a hostess who doesn't have an open dinner table for centerpiece placement. A 15-18 inch arrangement in a footed silver or ceramic compote. Goes on a console, mantel, or sideboard.

Price: $175-$350

3. Wrapped + vase pairing

For when you want the gift to feel personal. A loose hand-wrapped bouquet in cream paper PAIRED with a small simple clear glass cylinder vase as the gift. Hostess can arrange at her leisure (or save the vase for later).

Price: $150-$300

4. Orchid plant

Long-lasting (4-8 weeks), zero arrangement work for the hostess. White phalaenopsis in a ceramic pot is the most-requested. Reads thoughtful and modern.

Price: $150-$300

5. Outdoor garden party long table runner (when you're the host)

Not a hostess gift but for the host: a long cascading floral runner down a garden party table. We design these for brownstone backyard dinners, UES terrace parties, and Hamptons weekends. Garden roses, hydrangea, sweet pea, eucalyptus on white linen.

Price: $400-$1,200 depending on length

Summer-Specific Flowers to Request

What's in season May-September

  • Peonies — May-June peak (last call until next spring)
  • Garden roses — all summer, the workhorse
  • Hydrangea — all summer, holds up in heat
  • Sweet pea — May-July (fragrant, romantic)
  • Lisianthus — all summer, garden rose alternative
  • Dahlias — August-October (cafe au lait, deep burgundy, pink)
  • Sunflowers — August-September (use sparingly, can read country)
  • Zinnias — August-October (bright, cheerful)

What WON'T hold up in summer heat

  • Tulips — wilt above 75°F
  • Ranunculus — short vase life in heat
  • Lilac — out of season anyway

Memorial Day Weekend Specifically (May 23-25, 2026)

What's happening in NYC

  • BBQs and grilling parties (brownstone backyards, rooftops)
  • Long weekend Hamptons / Hudson Valley / Litchfield County escapes
  • Memorial Day military memorials and observances
  • The unofficial start of summer entertaining

What to send

  • For the Hamptons weekend host: hand-arranged welcome bouquet delivered to the beach house before guests arrive (we deliver to all Hamptons towns Thursdays Memorial Day through Labor Day)
  • For the BBQ/casual party: low garden centerpiece in stoneware, $200-$300
  • For the Memorial Day military observance / fallen heroes tribute: see our Memorial Day for Fallen Heroes guide

Timing — When to Send the Gift

Send ahead (recommended)

Deliver to the host's address the morning of the party. They can place it on the table before guests arrive. No "I have to find a vase" moment. Most-requested timing: 11 AM-2 PM delivery for an evening dinner party.

Bring with you

If you're delivering in person, make sure it's already in a vessel. Wrapped bouquets are a chore.

After the party

A thank-you arrangement sent the day AFTER is a quietly powerful move. "Last night was beautiful, thank you for having us." Send the morning after.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best hostess gift flower arrangement?

A low garden-style centerpiece (12-14 inches) already in a stoneware vessel. Hostess places it on the table — no vase-finding required. $200-$400.

Should I send flowers ahead or bring them in person?

Send ahead — 11 AM-2 PM delivery for an evening dinner party. The hostess places the arrangement before guests arrive. Less stress than arriving with a wrapped bouquet she has to handle.

What flowers hold up best in NYC summer heat?

Hydrangea, garden roses, lisianthus, dahlias (August+), orchids. Tulips and ranunculus wilt quickly above 75°F — we avoid them for outdoor summer use.

Do you deliver to the Hamptons?

Yes — Thursday route Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Westhampton to Montauk. Delivery fees $95-$165 depending on town. Order by Tuesday for Thursday delivery.

What's the right amount to spend on a hostess gift?

For a casual dinner: $150-$250. For a formal dinner or weekend stay: $300-$500. For a large dinner party at a meaningful host's home: $400-$700.

Can you handle a full garden party styling order?

Yes — table runners, mantel arrangements, bar floral, welcome arrangement, powder room accent. We've designed dozens of summer brownstone and rooftop garden parties. 72 hours' notice ideal. Call to discuss.

One Final Note

Summer entertaining is about ease — for the host and for the guest. The best hostess gift is one that requires nothing from the recipient except to admire it. Arrive (or send) with that in mind, and you'll be the guest she invites back.
