Graduation Flower Gifts: Manhattan Guide
TJ Flowers NYCShare
Graduation season in Manhattan is a controlled frenzy. Between late May and mid-June, caps go up at Riverside Church (Columbia), Washington Square Park (NYU), Rose Hill and Lincoln Center (Fordham), and every prep school auditorium from the East 70s to the West Village. Somewhere in that scramble, parents and grandparents are trying to order flowers that will survive a three-hour ceremony, a photo on the quad, and a dinner reservation at 7 p.m.
We've been doing graduation flowers from our 1640 York Avenue shop since 1988 β long enough that we've delivered to second-generation Columbia grads whose parents we delivered to in the early 2000s. Here's the Manhattan parent's guide.
Elementary and Middle School Graduations
NYC private and public schools increasingly hold "moving up" ceremonies at 5th and 8th grades. These call for something smaller and age-appropriate β not a formal presentation bouquet.
Our recommended approach:
- Kid-scale bouquet β 10β12 stems, wrapped in kraft paper, something the graduate can actually hold for a photo without fumbling.
- Color counts. Pick a color they love, not the one that photographs best. A 10-year-old's favorite is the whole point.
- Budget: $65β$95. Our mixed bouquets at this price point are plenty.
High School Graduations (Prep Schools and Beyond)
Manhattan prep school graduations β Dalton, Spence, Trinity, Collegiate, Brearley, Chapin, Nightingale β are formal events held at school chapels, at the Met, or at venues like the 92nd Street Y. Public school graduations for Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Hunter are typically held at large auditoriums or Lincoln Center.
For high school grads, we see three popular choices:
- Cap-tied bouquet (traditional): A gathered hand-tie with a ribbon in the school's colors. Works for every setting and travels well.
- Single-stem long roses (classic): One dozen long-stem red or cream roses, sleeved. Elegant and simple. Budget: $95β$145.
- Peony hand-tie (modern): A lush seasonal bouquet of peonies β the favorite for most prep school grads these days. Budget: $125β$200.
Color and Ribbon
If you want to match school colors, we can wrap in the appropriate ribbon β Dalton navy and red, Spence green and white, Chapin green and navy. Just mention it when ordering. For public schools, neutral ribbon is always safe.
College Graduations in Manhattan
College is where the stakes and the arrangements both get bigger. Here's how we handle the three biggest Manhattan graduations.
Columbia University
Columbia's University Commencement happens on the Morningside Heights campus in mid-May. Individual school ceremonies (College, Engineering, GS, SIPA, Law, Medical) stretch across the following week. The campus is packed; delivery logistics matter.
What works:
- Deliver to the off-campus address β a graduate's apartment, parents' hotel, or dinner venue. Delivering to a dorm during commencement week is unreliable.
- Columbia blue ribbon adds a graceful touch to any bouquet.
- Post-ceremony bouquet β many parents order flowers delivered to their dinner reservation (Le Monde on Broadway, Dinosaur BBQ on 125th, or a downtown restaurant) for a surprise presentation.
NYU
NYU's main ceremony is at Yankee Stadium, with individual school ceremonies across Washington Square and the East Village. The logistics problem: you can't carry a large bouquet into Yankee Stadium with any grace. Strategy:
- Send flowers to the post-ceremony destination β the graduate's apartment in the East Village or a family dinner reservation.
- Go modern. NYU's aesthetic skews contemporary. A tight monochromatic bouquet suits the student and the setting better than a garden style.
- Budget: $125β$250 is the typical range for a college graduation bouquet.
Fordham
Fordham's Rose Hill and Lincoln Center graduations are among the most elegant in the city, with strong family traditions. Classic bouquets β long-stem roses, peony hand-ties, garden-style arrangements β all fit the setting well. Deliveries to Lincoln Center area restaurants or to the family's hotel are the norm.
Bouquet vs. Lei: When to Choose What
Flower leis have become a second Manhattan tradition at graduations, especially among families with Hawaiian, Filipino, or Pacific Islander heritage, or simply students who've picked up the custom from friends. They layer beautifully over a gown, photograph perfectly, and travel well.
Our rule of thumb:
- Bouquet: Default choice for most NYC graduations, presented at the reception or after the ceremony.
- Lei: Place over the gown before or immediately after walking. Looks best if 2β3 are layered; consider coordinating with siblings or friends to each bring one.
- Both: A lei during the ceremony photos, a bouquet at dinner.
Timing and Delivery
Graduation week is our busiest period outside of Valentine's and Mother's Day. A few logistics lessons we've learned:
- Order at least 3 days in advance. Peonies, garden roses, and seasonal premium flowers sell out.
- Confirm the delivery window carefully. Ceremony days mean nobody's at the apartment from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Send to the evening dinner venue or a doorman building.
- Photo-day logistics: If the bouquet is going in the graduation photos, the flowers need to be delivered the morning of, not the day before. Fresh-cut matters.
Our delivery team knows every campus and most of the restaurants Manhattan families book for graduation dinners. Tell us the ceremony and the reservation and we'll handle the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best flower for a graduation bouquet?
Peonies in season (late AprilβJune, perfectly timed for graduation), garden roses year-round, or a classic dozen long-stem roses. See our peonies and roses collections.
How much should I spend on graduation flowers?
$65β$95 for elementary/middle school, $95β$175 for high school, $125β$250 for college. Adjust up for immediate family milestones (medical school, law school, PhD) where you can easily reach $300+.
Can I deliver flowers to a dorm at Columbia or NYU?
Technically yes, but graduation week is chaotic. We strongly recommend delivering to an off-campus apartment, a parents' hotel, or directly to the dinner venue instead.
What if I can't attend the graduation in person?
Send flowers to the graduate's home for the evening of the ceremony with a handwritten card. It's one of the most appreciated long-distance gestures. See our mixed bouquets for ideas.
Are leis the right choice for a Columbia or NYU graduation?
Leis have become widely accepted at NYC college graduations and look stunning in photos. If the graduate has ever been to Hawaii, has friends from the Pacific, or just likes the tradition, it's a great call. Leis travel best if ordered 48 hours ahead.
