How to Care for Anemones: A Florist's Guide
TJ Flowers & EventsShare
Anemones are pure drama in a small package — saturated petals around an inky center, on slender stems that move beautifully in an arrangement. They behave a little differently from other cut flowers, so a few notes go a long way.
How long do cut anemones last?
Cut anemones last 5 to 8 days. Buy them when the blooms are still cupped and partly closed — they'll open more in the vase, and you'll get the full life out of them.
The two things that surprise people
- They keep growing. Anemone stems continue to elongate and bend toward the light after cutting. This is normal — it gives arrangements a lovely natural movement, but it means a tidy bunch will reshape itself over a couple of days.
- They're thirsty. Anemones drink quickly, so the water level drops faster than you'd expect. Check and top up the water daily so the stems never run dry.
The care routine
- Recut the stems on an angle with a sharp blade and strip any leaves below the waterline.
- Cool, clean water — anemones are a cool-season flower and last longest in cool rooms and cool water. Use flower food.
- Top up daily, change every 2 days. Because they drink so much, watch the level; refresh and recut every couple of days.
- Keep them cool and out of direct sun, away from radiators and ripening fruit.

Why do my anemones open and close?
This is completely normal and one of their charms: anemones are light-responsive — they open up in bright light during the day and close again in the evening or in dim rooms. It's not a sign of wilting. If they stop responding and the petals go limp and papery, that's the end of their natural life.
A note from the shop
