Lily Meanings by Color: Sympathy, Love, Purity
TJ Flowers NYCShare
The lily is the flower most often misunderstood in our studio. Clients call asking for "something not too funeral-looking," by which they often mean "no white lilies." But white lilies are wedding flowers, resurrection flowers, Marian flowers, and Easter flowers at least as often as they are sympathy flowers โ and the other colors of lily carry meanings nothing like white's. Color in lilies matters more than in almost any other flower. At TJ Flowers NYC, we have been designing with lilies for every occasion you can name, and this guide unpacks what each color and each variety actually says.
The Ancient Roots of Lily Symbolism
Lilies are among the oldest cultivated flowers. Egyptian wall paintings from 1500 BCE depict white lilies. Minoan frescoes on Crete show them as sacred. The Greek myth of the lily's origin โ that Hera was tricked into nursing the infant Heracles, and when she pulled away, her milk spilled across the heavens (creating the Milky Way) and onto the earth (creating white lilies) โ gave the lily its oldest meaning: purity, divinity, the sacred feminine.
The Romans used white lilies for wedding garlands โ they meant pure love and fruitful union. Early Christianity absorbed the lily into Marian iconography: in Fra Angelico's Annunciation, the angel Gabriel presents a white lily to the Virgin Mary. The Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum) became the symbol of the Resurrection. Before the lily meant anything about funerals, it meant everything about divinity.
Victorian Floriography: Lilies by Color
The Victorian language of flowers assigned specific meanings to lily colors, and those assignments are still broadly readable:
- White lily: purity, virtue, majesty, restored innocence.
- Pink (stargazer) lily: prosperity, ambition, good wishes.
- Yellow lily: gratitude, enjoyment, walking on air.
- Orange (tiger) lily: confidence, pride, passion, wealth.
- Red lily: love, ardor, desire.
- Calla lily (all colors): magnificent beauty; white callas specifically mean purity and resurrection.
White Lilies: The Most Misunderstood Flower
White lilies have always meant purity. They also became the canonical funeral flower in Victorian mourning culture, which did everything to the color white and applied it generously to death. That association stuck in popular memory, so today many Americans reflexively associate white lilies with loss.
But the deeper meaning โ purity, restored innocence, resurrection โ is why white lilies also anchor weddings, baptisms, Easter arrangements, and Marian imagery. Context decides the reading. A white lily at a hospital bouquet means "get well, regain your strength." A white lily in a cathedral bouquet on a wedding day means "pure and faithful love." A white lily in a sympathy arrangement means "at peace, restored."
If you want the beauty of white lilies without any funereal read, pair them with warmer colors (peach roses, coral ranunculus, soft pink peonies) โ the mixed bouquet signals celebration. See our white flower arrangements for curated wedding and celebration designs.
Pink Lilies: Prosperity and Good Wishes
Pink lilies โ especially the Stargazer, Lilium 'Stargazer', the iconic fuchsia-and-white spotted oriental lily โ carry a Victorian meaning of prosperity, abundance, and good wishes. The Stargazer is a mid-20th century hybrid, but its upward-facing face (unlike the drooping older orientals) made it an instant symbol of optimism.
Pink lilies are the right choice for birthdays, graduations, promotions, and any gift that means "I wish you every good thing." They are also a popular Mother's Day flower for the feminine warmth of the color.
Yellow Lilies: Gratitude and Joy
Yellow Asiatic lilies mean thankfulness and walking on air. They are our recommended flower for saying "thank you" in a way that doesn't tip into romance. Teachers, coaches, mentors, and the person who helped you move last Saturday are all right recipients. Yellow lilies also carry a meaning of returning happiness โ good for a friend who is climbing back out of a hard year.
Orange Lilies: Tiger Lilies and Confidence
The tiger lily โ Lilium lancifolium, with its distinctive recurved orange petals and black spots โ is the flower of pride, confidence, and wealth. In some Victorian sources, the tiger lily's meaning tips into "please don't be too proud" โ a gentle warning to the recipient. In modern usage it simply means boldness and warmth.
Orange lilies are also culturally important in Chinese tradition, where the lily (bai he) symbolizes a hundred years of harmony in marriage. Orange and red lilies appear in Chinese wedding arrangements for exactly that meaning.
Red Lilies: Love and Ardor
Red lilies carry the same general meaning as red roses โ passion, love, desire โ but with more drama. They are less common in NYC gifting than red roses, which makes them memorable when used. A single stem of red oriental lily with greenery can read as more striking than a dozen roses.
Lily Varieties: A Designer's Reference
Beyond color, different lily types carry different symbolic and practical meanings. Here are the ones we work with most:
- Calla lily (Zantedeschia): magnificent beauty, resurrection. Architectural and minimal โ a graphic wedding and sympathy flower. White for weddings and memorials; pink, peach, burgundy, and black for modern designs.
- Stargazer lily (Oriental): prosperity and ambition. The iconic pink-and-white speckled lily with upward-facing blooms and strong fragrance.
- Asiatic lily: pure love, honor. Smaller, unscented, wide color range. Good workhorse lily for mixed arrangements.
- Tiger lily (Lilium lancifolium): confidence, wealth, prosperity.
- Oriental lily (Casablanca, Stargazer): grand, fragrant, formal. Used for events and stateroom arrangements.
- Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum): resurrection, new life, Marian purity. The canonical spring white lily with long trumpet blooms.
- Lily of the valley: return of happiness, humility. (Technically not a true lily, but culturally grouped with them.)
- Daylily: coquetry, motherhood (in Chinese symbolism โ daylily is the "mother flower" of Chinese tradition, given to mothers instead of carnations).
Sending Lilies by Occasion
- Sympathy: white oriental lilies or calla lilies, often with white roses. See our sympathy and tribute flowers.
- Weddings: white calla lilies, Casablanca lilies, or Easter lilies for modern or traditional ceremonies.
- Thank you: yellow Asiatic lilies.
- Birthday / celebration: pink stargazer lilies or orange tiger lilies.
- Housewarming: pink or peach orientals โ prosperity and good wishes.
- Apology: white lilies or white tulips.
- Anniversary: red oriental lilies or mixed red-and-pink.
A Practical Note on Fragrance and Pets
Oriental and stargazer lilies are beautifully fragrant โ possibly too fragrant for some dining rooms or hospital rooms. Asiatic lilies are unscented. Also critical: all true lilies are toxic to cats. Even pollen on a cat's fur can be dangerous. If the recipient has a cat, we substitute lilies for alstroemeria (Peruvian lily, which is not a true lily and is cat-safe) or for roses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are white lilies only for funerals?
No โ this is the most common misconception about lilies. White lilies have meant purity, divinity, and resurrection for 3,500 years. They are canonical wedding flowers, Easter flowers, and Marian flowers. They are also used for sympathy, which is why many Americans associate them with funerals. Context and pairing resolve the reading.
What lily color means love?
Red lilies mean ardor and passion. Pink lilies mean affection and good wishes. For an explicitly romantic message, red oriental lilies are the strongest choice; for a warmer, less intense meaning, pink stargazers.
Can I send lilies to someone with a cat?
No. All true lilies โ including Asiatic, oriental, calla, Easter, and tiger lilies โ are toxic to cats. Even pollen transfer to a cat's fur, which the cat then grooms off, can cause kidney failure. We substitute alstroemeria or roses whenever cats are involved.
What's the difference between a stargazer and an Asiatic lily?
Stargazers are oriental lilies โ larger flowers, strong fragrance, pink-and-white speckled, upward-facing. Asiatic lilies are smaller, unscented, and come in a wider color range. For a statement arrangement, stargazers; for a longer-lasting mixed bouquet, Asiatics.
What does a calla lily symbolize?
Magnificent beauty and, in the Victorian tradition, resurrection. Calla lilies are especially associated with Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings and with art deco wedding bouquets. White callas are our most frequent request for modern weddings and for sympathy work where a sleek, dignified flower is wanted.
