NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Flower Delivery: NYC Florist's Guide

By the TJ Flowers & Events design team — Manhattan florist since 1988.

Why Sending Flowers to NewYork-Presbyterian Requires Knowing the Campus

NewYork-Presbyterian is one of the largest hospital systems in the U.S., with two flagship academic medical centers in Manhattan (Weill Cornell on the Upper East Side and Columbia in Washington Heights), plus regional hospitals across the metro area. Each campus has its own loading dock, security protocols, and unit-specific flower restrictions. Sending to the wrong campus or the wrong unit means a returned arrangement.

For 38 years our Manhattan studio has delivered to NYP campuses across the system. This guide covers what we've learned about routing arrangements correctly the first time.

NYP's Two Manhattan Flagship Hospitals

NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center (525 East 68th Street)

The Upper East Side flagship. Sits on East 68th Street between York Avenue and the FDR Drive. A 4-minute drive from our studio.

Floral policy:

  • General medical and surgical floors: typically allowed
  • Maternity (Greenberg Pavilion): warmly welcomed
  • NICU, PICU, all ICUs: not allowed
  • Cardiothoracic step-down: usually allowed but check
  • Komansky Children's Hospital (pediatric inpatient): typically restricted
  • Bone marrow transplant: not allowed

NewYork-Presbyterian / Columbia University Irving Medical Center (622 West 168th Street)

The Washington Heights flagship. Sits on West 168th Street between Broadway and Fort Washington Avenue. 30-40 minutes from our Upper East Side studio depending on traffic.

Same general floral policies as Weill Cornell, with these notes:

  • Milstein Hospital Building (main inpatient): standard hospital rules
  • Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital: restricted
  • NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital — Allen Hospital (5141 Broadway, Inwood): smaller community hospital, standard rules

Regional NYP campuses we deliver to

  • NYP Brooklyn Methodist (506 6th Street, Park Slope) — 45-60 min
  • NYP Lower Manhattan (170 William Street, FiDi) — 25-35 min
  • NYP Queens (56-45 Main Street, Flushing) — 60-90 min
  • NYP Hudson Valley (1980 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor) — 90+ min, scheduled only
  • NYP Westchester Behavioral Health (21 Bloomingdale Road, White Plains) — 60-90 min

NYP main switchboard: (212) 746-5454 (Weill Cornell) or (212) 305-2500 (Columbia). Always confirm with the nursing station before sending.

What Flowers Work Across All NYP Campuses

The hospital recipe

  • Compact — under 12 inches tall, fits a standard hospital nightstand
  • Low or no fragrance — patients on multiple medications experience smells more intensely
  • Pollen-free — we strip every anther
  • Ceramic or melamine vessel — never glass
  • Spill-proof — won't tip if the nursing station bumps it during handoff

Best flower choices

  • White roses, blush garden roses (durable, low fragrance)
  • Spray roses (abundant, gentle)
  • Ranunculus (full, pollen-free)
  • Lisianthus (durable, romantic, no fragrance)
  • Alstroemeria (lasts 2 weeks, no scent)
  • Dendrobium orchids (exotic, no fragrance)
  • Carnations (durable, gentle — don't dismiss them)

Avoid

  • Stargazer or Oriental lilies (overpowering)
  • Hyacinths, gardenia, jasmine (heavy scent)
  • Sunflowers (high pollen)
  • Tulips (continue growing)
  • Anything thorny that hasn't been dethorned

NYP Maternity: A Special Case

NewYork-Presbyterian's maternity wards — Weill Cornell's Greenberg Pavilion and Columbia's Sloane Hospital for Women — are among the warmest welcomes for fresh flowers. New parents and visiting family genuinely appreciate them.

For new-baby flowers we recommend:

  • Soft palettes: blush, ivory, soft pink (for girls or neutral), pale blue (for boys or neutral), buttery yellow
  • Lush abundance — maternity rooms have more space than standard hospital rooms; a fuller arrangement reads as celebration
  • Add a small gift — a soft baby blanket, a hardcover children's book, a small stuffed animal
  • Card to the new parent, not to the baby — "So happy for you both. The world just got luckier. — Sarah" lands better than "Welcome to the world, Baby Hudson!"

Best new-baby flowers

  • Pink and white peonies (in season May-June)
  • Garden roses
  • Ranunculus
  • Sweet pea (in season spring)
  • Soft pastel mixed bouquets

Delivery to Weill Cornell

What to provide

  • Patient's full name (legal name on hospital records)
  • Floor and room number, if known
  • Pavilion + unit (e.g., "Greenberg Pavilion 2 South" for maternity, "M5" for medical floors)
  • Patient's recipient phone (for nurse coordination)
  • Card message

Delivery process

Our driver checks in at the East 68th Street main lobby. Hospital security directs to the correct elevator bank. Arrangement delivered to the nursing station; nurse walks to the patient's room. We do not enter rooms.

If the unit has flower restrictions or the patient has been moved, the arrangement is held at the nursing station and the family is contacted for direction.

Same-day timing

Our studio is a 4-minute drive to Weill Cornell. Same-day delivery available for orders placed by 3 PM Monday-Friday and by 12 PM Saturday. Most NYP/Weill Cornell same-day deliveries are at the patient's bedside within 90 minutes of order.

Delivery to Columbia / Washington Heights

Driving and timing

From our Upper East Side studio, the trip to NYP/Columbia in Washington Heights is 30-40 minutes in normal traffic. We dispatch our Columbia deliveries with this in mind — order by 1 PM for guaranteed same-day to Columbia campuses (vs. 3 PM for Weill Cornell).

Same protocol

Same recipe (compact, low fragrance, pollen-free, ceramic vessel). Same delivery process (driver checks in at main lobby, nursing station handoff). Same restrictions (NICU, PICU, BMT, pediatric oncology).

For surgical recovery

  • "Sending healing thoughts. No need to write back. — David"

Frequently Asked Questions

Are flowers allowed at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital?

Yes, on most general medical and surgical floors. Restrictions apply in NICU, PICU, ICUs, bone marrow transplant, and pediatric oncology units. Maternity wards (Greenberg Pavilion at Weill Cornell, Sloane at Columbia) warmly welcome flowers. Always confirm with the nursing station before sending.

Can you deliver same-day to Weill Cornell?

Yes. Our Upper East Side studio is a 4-minute drive from the East 68th Street campus. Same-day delivery available for orders placed by 3 PM Monday-Friday and by 12 PM Saturday.

What flowers are best for a new-baby arrival at NYP maternity?

Soft pastel palettes (blush, ivory, pale blue, buttery yellow). Peonies (in season May-June), garden roses, ranunculus, sweet pea. Lush and abundant — maternity rooms have space. Pair with a small soft baby blanket or hardcover children's book for an extra-meaningful gift.

Can you deliver to NYP/Columbia in Washington Heights?

Yes. Same-day delivery to Columbia/Washington Heights for orders placed by 1 PM (vs. 3 PM cutoff for Weill Cornell, due to longer drive). Delivery fee $35 vs $25 for Weill Cornell.

Can I send flowers to a NYP NICU patient?

Generally no. NICUs at both Weill Cornell (Greenberg Pavilion) and Columbia (Morgan Stanley Children's) prohibit fresh flowers and plants. Send to the parents at home, or to the family waiting area outside the NICU. A meal delivered to the family is often more useful at this stage.

What's the difference between Weill Cornell and Columbia for delivery purposes?

Weill Cornell is on the Upper East Side (4-min drive from our studio). Columbia is in Washington Heights (30-40 min). Both are part of the same NYP system but they're distinct campuses with separate inpatient towers, separate loading docks, and separate same-day cutoffs.

How much should I spend on hospital flowers for a NYP patient?

Hospital arrangements run smaller than home gifts. $85-$200 for cut flowers, $125-$300 for plants or premium arrangements, $300-$600 for care packages with thoughtful extras. New-baby maternity bouquets can run lusher ($150-$300) since the room and occasion can support it.

One Final Note

NewYork-Presbyterian is two of the world's leading academic medical centers, plus a network of regional hospitals. Each campus is its own world. The most important thing you can do before sending is confirm with the nursing station whether flowers are appropriate for the patient's specific unit and condition.

For a NYP delivery — Weill Cornell, Columbia, or any regional campus — please reach our design team or call (212) 628-1214. We confirm the unit's flower policy before we start designing.
