Ranunculus vs Peonies: Which to Choose for Your NYC Event
TJ Flowers NYCShare
"Ranunculus or peonies?" is one of the most common questions we hear from clients planning spring and early-summer events in New York. On the surface they look related β both are lush, layered, romantic flowers dominating wedding boards on Pinterest β but they behave very differently as cut flowers, cost very different amounts, and work in very different scales. Pick the wrong one for the wrong event and you either blow your budget or end up with centerpieces that feel thin by hour three.
At TJ Flowers (1640 York Avenue, serving the Upper East Side and all of Manhattan since 1988), we design with both constantly between March and June. This guide breaks down exactly how ranunculus and peonies compare on the criteria that actually matter: bloom size, price per stem, seasonality, vase life, and which flower genuinely works better for your specific event.
The Basic Difference
Ranunculus (Ranunculus asiaticus, the Persian buttercup) is a small-to-medium layered flower with dozens of paper-thin, almost origami-like petals arranged in a tight dome. A full bloom is 2 to 3 inches across. Stems are delicate and slightly curved. Peonies (Paeonia lactiflora) are large, heavy, multi-petaled blooms that open from a tight ball to a full-blown, soft, ruffled head that can reach 5 to 8 inches across. Stems are thick and woody.
In a visual sense, one ranunculus is a delicate detail. One peony is a statement.
Bloom Size, Weight, and Visual Impact
The size difference is the most important thing to understand before pricing, because it completely changes how many stems you need. A single peony can anchor a small arrangement entirely on its own β we often build 4-inch bud vases with just one peony stem and a bit of foliage for intimate dinner parties. A single ranunculus is never enough; they work in groupings of 5 to 15 stems, where their smaller, intricate blooms create a jewel-box texture that a few peonies can't match.
For a 10-inch round centerpiece:
- Peony-led design: 5-7 peonies plus accent greenery
- Ranunculus-led design: 25-35 ranunculus stems plus greenery and perhaps 2-3 accent roses
Price Per Stem in Manhattan
In peak season, retail pricing in NYC runs roughly:
| Criteria | Ranunculus | Peonies |
|---|---|---|
| Bloom diameter | 2 β 3 inches | 5 β 8 inches |
| Price per stem (NYC retail) | $4 β $8 | $10 β $22 |
| Stems needed for 10-inch centerpiece | 25 β 35 | 5 β 7 |
| Vase life | 5 β 10 days | 4 β 7 days |
| Peak season | March β May (domestic); year-round w/ imports | May β June (domestic); OctβDec (Alaska/NZ) |
| Fragrance | None to very light | Medium to strong, sweet |
| Best at | Texture, jewel detail, pave arrangements | Statement, visual anchor, romance |
Per-stem, ranunculus is cheaper. But for an arrangement of equal visual weight, the two often land at roughly similar total cost, because you need many more ranunculus stems to match one peony's presence.
Seasonality: The Single Biggest Constraint
Ranunculus season
Peak domestic ranunculus from California and Washington State arrives in NYC from late February through May. Imported ranunculus from Italy and Israel is available through much of the year but commands premium pricing outside peak. For any event March through early June, ranunculus is at its absolute best.
Peony season
Domestic peonies (grown in New York, Pennsylvania, and up through Canada) have a tight window: May and June. A secondary window runs October through December using Alaska, Chile, and New Zealand imports. July and August peonies are nearly impossible and extremely expensive when available.
If your event is in April, ranunculus is clearly the right answer. If your event is in June, you can have both β but peonies will be at their absolute peak. If your event is in August, neither is ideal; we'd steer you toward garden roses, dahlias, or hydrangeas instead.
Vase Life and Event Day Performance
Peonies and ranunculus both have tight vase-life windows, which matters enormously for multi-day events. Ranunculus: 5 to 10 days with good care β they're actually more durable than people expect. Peonies: 4 to 7 days, with the critical caveat that they go from tight bud to fully open in as little as 24 hours once they decide to bloom. For a Saturday wedding, we typically want peonies delivered Thursday or Friday so they're opening on the day-of. Ranunculus is more forgiving β delivered Thursday and still looking beautiful on Sunday morning. Our peony care guide covers the full protocol for maximizing their open window.
Which Works Better for Your NYC Event
Choose ranunculus when:
- Your event is in March, April, or early May (domestic peak)
- You want a textured, jewel-box, pavΓ©-style arrangement
- You're building small bud-vase runs for a long dinner table (they cost less per vase)
- You want variety of color without variety of flower type (ranunculus comes in every color except true blue)
Choose peonies when:
- Your event is in May, June, or OctoberβDecember
- You want a single anchor flower with big visual impact
- Fragrance is part of the experience (peonies have a sweet, fresh scent; ranunculus have almost none)
- You're designing for photographs where bloom size matters (wedding bouquets, hero arrangements)
Choose both when:
- Your event is in May β both are at peak
- You want contrast: peonies as the anchor, ranunculus filling in jewel-tone detail
- You're designing a luxury-scale wedding at a venue like the Pierre, Plaza, or Cipriani
We frequently design arrangements that combine both, layered with garden roses, sweet pea, and soft foliage. It's one of the most photographed spring palettes in NYC for a reason.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are ranunculus cheaper than peonies in NYC?
Per individual stem, yes β typically $4-$8 vs. $10-$22. But for the same visual impact in a finished arrangement, the costs often end up close because ranunculus requires significantly more stems.
Do peonies smell?
Yes β medium to strong sweet fragrance, especially in older varieties like Sarah Bernhardt. Ranunculus are essentially unscented.
Can I get peonies for a July wedding in NYC?
Difficult and expensive. We can sometimes source late-season Alaska peonies in very early July, but for mid or late July we typically pivot to garden roses or dahlias. Call us at least a month ahead if you need July peonies.
Do ranunculus petals fall off easily?
They can shatter if handled roughly, but in a settled arrangement they hold well. We process them gently and keep them cool right up until delivery to the venue or to our corporate clients.
Which is better for a bridal bouquet?
It depends entirely on scale. For an intimate 20-person City Hall wedding, an all-ranunculus bouquet is exquisite. For a large traditional ceremony, peonies or a peony-ranunculus blend gives the bouquet more weight in wide-angle photos.
