The Mark Is Where Old Madison Avenue Meets Modern Manhattan Cool
The Mark Hotel on East 77th Street and Madison Avenue is the modern luxury answer to The Carlyle. Designed by Jacques Grange in 2009, its black-and-white striped marble lobby is one of the most recognizable hotel interiors in New York. The 16,000-square-foot Penthouse Terrace on the rooftop offers private views of Central Park and is the venue for Manhattan's most exclusive intimate weddings — Mary-Kate Olsen, JLo, and Anne Hathaway have all stayed here. The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges anchors the ground floor.
For 38 years our UES studio has worked weddings at The Mark. This guide covers the venue's distinctive aesthetic and the floral approach that fits.

The Mark Aesthetic — Modern Luxury
What works
- Sculptural / architectural arrangements — height, drama, intentional shape
- White phalaenopsis orchids as a primary flower (matches the modern aesthetic)
- Branches — cherry blossom, magnolia, dogwood (in season) for sculptural drama
- Tonal palettes — all white, all blush, all coral, never multi-color
- Hand-thrown ceramic, blown glass, or polished black vessels
- Modern bridal bouquet styles — asymmetric or sculptural over round-classic
What doesn't work
- Maximalist garden style with mixed blooms
- Silver or crystal vessels (too Carlyle, not Mark)
- Boho aesthetics
- Multi-color "spring mix" arrangements
Penthouse Terrace Wedding Design
The terrace ceremony
The Penthouse Terrace is the most sought-after outdoor wedding view in Manhattan. The aisle runs along the terrace edge with Central Park as the backdrop. Floral approach:
- No solid arch — don't block the view
- Modern asymmetric arch with an off-center burst of white phalaenopsis orchids and trailing greenery
- Or: Two tall sculptural ceramic vessels flanking the couple with branch installations
Indoor reception
The Penthouse interior is white-on-white with statement art. Floral should be:
- Sculptural / architectural — height matters, statement matters
- Tall trumpet vases with branches, orchids, and trailing greenery (5-7 ft)
- Low minimalist arrangements alternating with tall pieces — 8-12 inches in matte black or hand-thrown ceramic

The Mark Restaurant Reception
The Jean-Georges restaurant's black-and-white striped marble is the most photographed restaurant interior in NYC. Floral here should be:
- All-white as the dominant palette — pops against the dramatic marble
- Tall white phalaenopsis orchids in clear blown glass cylinders — modern and dramatic
- Or all-coral / all-blush tonal palette for a warmer counterpoint to the cool marble

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the floral budget for a Mark Hotel wedding?
$13,000-$32,000 for 60-100 guests. The Mark's intimate scale with ultra-luxury per-guest spend is similar to The Carlyle, with most clients investing $18,000-$25,000.
What floral style works at The Mark?
Modern, sculptural, architectural. White phalaenopsis orchids, branches (cherry blossom/magnolia/dogwood), tonal palettes. Hand-thrown ceramic or blown glass vessels. Avoid garden-style maximalism — that's Carlyle territory, not Mark.
Can the ceremony be outside on the Penthouse Terrace?
Yes — that's the venue's signature. Direct private view of Central Park. We design no-solid-arch ceremonies (asymmetric arch or flanking vessels) so the view shows through.
How does wind affect floral on the Penthouse Terrace?
Significantly. Tall arrangements need weighted bases and sometimes anchoring. Light/airy floral (loose ranunculus, sweet pea) requires wind-resistant compositions. We design for wind from day one for any terrace work.
Can the entire Mark Restaurant be bought out for a wedding?
Yes — full buyout for ceremony and reception accommodates ~100. The black-and-white marble interior is dramatic on its own; floral should be tonal (all-white or all-blush) to complement, not compete.
Do you provide installation and breakdown for Mark Hotel weddings?
Yes — full-service. Our team coordinates directly with the hotel's banquet captain.
One Final Note
The Mark Hotel is for couples who want a wedding that feels like a Vogue editorial — modern, sophisticated, photographed-to-death. Floral should match that ambition: sculptural over sentimental, intentional over abundant.
